The Story of Anaheim Manufacturing

1960s: The Foundation Era

In the 1960s, Anaheim began its transformation from a primarily agricultural community to a bustling manufacturing hub. The opening of Disneyland in 1955 catalyzed this shift in the decade to follow, attracting businesses and workers to the area along with a 1950s rate war between the 2 railroad giants, Southern Pacific and Santa Fe, which lead to cheap transportation to the West with fares as low as $1 from Kansas City to Los Angeles. The population surged and the 1960s saw the rise of aerospace, electronics, and automotive parts manufacturing throughout Anaheim & Los Angeles. Companies were drawn to Anaheim for its available land, favorable business environment, and growing workforce. This era laid the groundwork for Anaheim's diverse manufacturing sector and even the Anaheim Convention Center, which was built in 1967.

1970s: Diversification and Expansion

During the 1970s, Anaheim's manufacturing sector continued to expand and diversify. The city's proximity to major transportation routes and the Port of Los Angeles helped the growth of industries such as textiles, plastics, and consumer goods. The establishment of industrial parks and business-friendly policies by the city government attracted a range of manufacturers. This decade also saw the growth of small and medium-sized businesses, which contributed significantly to the local economy. Large infrastructure projects, such as the completion of the I-5 freeway, the expansion of John Wayne Airport, and the development of a growing public transportation network further enhanced Anaheim's appeal for manufacturers and businesses.

1980s: Technological Advancement

The 1980s marked a period of technological innovation in Anaheim's manufacturing sector. The rise of the personal computer and the growing tech industry led to a boom in electronics and computer component manufacturing. Manufacturers began adopting several advanced manufacturing technologies in the process, leading to increased efficiency and productivity. In addition to the growing tech field, local governments, businesses, and universities began working together to develop a skilled workforce capable of honing the technological advancements of the decade. This included unique programs for students to gain practical experience and knowledge in this new and exciting technical era. With Anaheim now a major city and tourist attraction, the city saw an expansion of the Convention Center in 1982 and the very first MD&M tradeshow in 1985, exactly 40 years ago.

1990s: Globalization and Quality Improvement

In the 1990s, Anaheim's manufacturers began to compete on a global scale. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) opened new markets and brought both challenges and opportunities. To remain competitive, Anaheim manufacturers focused on quality improvement and adopted lean manufacturing practices. The city became a center for medical device manufacturing, with companies developing innovative products for global healthcare markets, such as medical lasers introduced in 1995. These advancements solidified Anaheim's reputation as a hub for high-quality, cutting-edge manufacturing.

2000s & Today: Innovation and Sustainability

In the modern era, Anaheim has embraced innovation and sustainability in its manufacturing practices. The focus has shifted towards high-tech manufacturing, including medical devices, advanced automation, and green technologies. Collaboration between businesses, academia, and government has fostered a culture of innovation, making Anaheim a leader in cutting-edge manufacturing sectors. The city's commitment to sustainable practices has attracted companies specializing in green manufacturing, forging the birth of the Sustainable Manufacturing Expo, our new co-locate!
